The Web Blocker – Tool to Block Any Website
Review by on
The Web Blocker, as its name so adequately points out, will block access to websites. It does this in several ways. You can set up a list of blocked sites (also known as blacklist) and the application will block access to these sites. You can set up a list of allowed sites (also known as whitelist) and the application will block access to all the sites apart from those on the list. Or you can use the application’s content filtering function to block access to certain types of sites, like adult sites or online gambling sites.

At 154KB, The Web Blocker’s installation file is quite lightweight and that is a good thing – it means that downloading it will take but a second. Run this file to launch a setup wizard and install The Web Blocker on your Windows PC. This is a simple task that will also take little of your time.

There’s nothing too complicated about The Web Blocker’s interface. It displays a list of users, a list of blocked sites, a user’s internet history, a content filtering section, and a bunch of buttons on the right side. Use these buttons to access the whitelists, the block template form, to change the password that protects access to The Web Blocker, and more.

Blocking access to a website is a simple 3-step process: select a user, type in the site’s URL (without the http://www part), and hit the Block Address button. That website will be added to the list of blocked sites; when the user wants to access it, The Web Blocker application will not allow it. The user will be presented with a “this page has been blocked” message.

That’s the sort of functionality you can expect to get from a “set up blacklists” point of view. You can also set up a whitelist, which is a list of websites the user is allowed to access. The Web Blocker will allow the user to access the sites on the whitelist and those sites only. Access to other sites apart from the ones on the whitelist will be blocked.

Last but not least, The Web Blocker also has some content filtering functionality to offer: it can block access to certain types of sites. It can block access to social networking sites, adult sites, games/gambling/music/videos sites, and proxy servers.

The Web Blocker is freeware. Donations are welcomed.

Use The Web Blocker to ensure your little one does not access websites that are inappropriate for a young child.

Pros
The Web Blocker is freeware. Use the application to set up blacklists and whitelists; use it to block access to certain types of sites with the content filtering functionality.

Cons
Offers to install the Incredibar toolbar and change your homepage and search engine. The interface feels dated. Sometimes it keeps blocking a website even though you removed it from the blocked list.
